Self Care
When we tune into ourselves, our energy, body/mind condition will let us know what we need or what we could benefit from, especially if we ask. As we accept and befriend ourselves our understanding of how we can support and care for ourselves deepens. The more we respond to and learn to satisfy our needs, the more we learn about ourselves and the healthier and more balanced we become.
Self Care suggestions:
1. Be one with yourself – eliminate distractions and schedule a regular appointment with yourself. You may have a special place to meet yourself at a pre-designated time. Don’t let anything get in the way of this.
2. Take time to recharge your batteries. By keeping your appointment with yourself you will know what you need to do. Whether it’s more sleep/rest; more fun with friends; exercise; solitude; or self expression – take the information your Self provides to you and act on it. You may want to consider complimentary healing, energy work or reflexology sessions to release stress, increase energy and restore a sense of wholeness and balance.
3. Make time to laugh – Laughter yoga is recognized as a new medicine, releasing stress and muscle tension and increasing energy and flow; definitely enhancing your health and a positive outlook….great for the stomach muscles too!
4. Move! Enjoy your physical body in motion. Muscles power life. Interact physically with the world around you for the sheer joy of movement. Whether it is expressive movement, ballroom dance, tango, competitive or team sports there’s nothing like feeling your body move through space. Discover how much more acute your senses are when you’re physically active.
5. Reflect and contemplate. Take time to appreciate yourself, your relationships and the natural world. Journal your thoughts and see where they take you. Alternatively play music, paint, write poetry etc. Give thanks for your discoveries. Celebrate your achievements. The attitude of gratitude is soooo good for the heart.
6. Nourish yourself. Feed the body good, healthy food – limit yourself to 80% the volume of what you think you want. Feed your mind and nervous system through choice stimulus – books, music, conversation, art or poetry.
7. Discover the peace within. The breath supports and sustains our life. It’s what connects us to the universal sea of energy we are all part of. Meditation as a regular daily practice helps us tune into this reality, grounding and centering us in the here, now and forever.
Holistic living requires a balanced approach that recognizes a healthy relationship to Self as fundamental. Self-care, as a personal commitment and practice, is an expression of respecting and honoring the Self.
